TO MY MOTHER
She was born in the thirties
Into the family of peasants
She had one brother but no sisters
And she was very sorry about it.
She went to school, then worked in the fields.
When the time came she married a man.
The years passed and she gave birth
To two daughters and two sons.
But her happy days weren’t very long
Her husband died of a bad disease.
But she had to live in spite of her loss
For four children and an expected one.
She gave the birth to the fifth child
And worked all day and night.
She built a beautiful wooden house
And kept all possible domestic animals.
She always got up early in the morning.
In winter she stoked a stove, prepared meals,
Span yarn and looked after the cattle,
Woke her children and hurried to the farm.
She came home tired but didn’t show it.
She looked after the cattle, stoked a stove,
Prepared supper, then knitted or sewed
Because she had children: three daughters, two sons.
In summer she worked hard in the garden
She sowed, planted or weeded weeds.
She mowed the grass and tossed the hay
She prepared hay while the sun shined.
Our mother did work of four or five
To make her children happy and strong.
But one morning she didn’t get up
Her heart stopped beating forever.
She left her children when she was sixty three
When she seemed to be full of life.
She couldn’t rest when she was alive
Because she had children: three daughters, two sons.
Mummy, I want to say to you many thanks
For your sleepless nights and uneasy days,
For your patience and strength, warmth and kindness
Responsibility and care, love and tenderness.
