TEENAGERS' SUBCULTURES

Punks

What is "punk"?

Punk is actually quite hard to define, but to give some understanding, it could be said that, it is a culture, a way of life, and more importantly a mind set that entails doing what makes you a happy unique individual, with no concern of what others think of you. Punk is about free expression, free thought, and about living life with passion. True punk adherents listen to the music because it entails those very qualities.

Punk is a subculture that is characterized by an opposition to strong government, which is often anarchist, a hatred for authority, a unique style of hair and clothing, a hatred of big business, an opposition to prejudice and many other qualities. Most of it's ideas are spread through music. Anti-Flag is a good example of a punk band. Punk has changed a lot, it began as, where what ever people weren’t wearing, and the punk fashion was not to follow the fashion, but now punks have split into various groups, with few original punks left.

The  origin of "punk"

Punk is a youth movement of the late 1970s, characterized by anti-Establishment slogans and outrageous clothes and hairstyles. Just like most of youth movement punk movement is based on peculiar ideology and music. The punk movement appeared in USA in 1964 under youths' impression of the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Therefore identifying sign of punk movement were British band Troggs and their song "Wild joke" as at the moment of punk movement Britain was the capital of world rock. The distinctive of punk movement was formation of a great number of so-called garage bands. Sure every band had hopes about brilliant future but life length of these bands was extremely short, as producers ignored them, so till late 70th all of them disappeared just like that.

Punks are easy to identify among other movements because of their hair-do. The typical hair-do for punk is Mohawk. First Mohawks were combat hair-do of the Iroquois Indians tribe and were used for frightening enemies. Than for some unknown reasons Mohawk became peculiar feature of punk movement. Mohawks may be of several types classic Mohawks, spiked, Mohican and so-called trash Mohawk. To make classic Mohawk one has to skin his head and left a narrow streak of hair which is have to be fixed vertically with a help of wax or other hair fixer. Spiked Mohawk is a spike-shaped Mohawk fixed with help of wax and usually died red or red-black. Spiked Mohawk is usually a women hair-do but most of punks believe that spike Mohawks suits men better. The Mohican is variety of spiked Mohawk but it's much easier to fix and long hair is not the obligatory condition. Mohican spikes it's a spikes all around the head and so one have to wear short hair. Trash Mohawk is the simplest one it's tossed hair fix with wax or spray.

As for style of dress of punks there's only one main demand - to protest fashion. For example in case if modern fashion trends say you have to wear cardigan punk will wear a jacket, and be sure he will wear it next to the skin, punk will tuck his trousers into his boots if you say him that trousers should be over boots. In two words the main trend of punk style is discrepancy and tastelessness. Stylish punk is not a punk at all.

The  values  of a punk

Punks are often leftists, or anarchists. They strongly support human rights and civil liberties. Although many punks are not political.

Actually protest is the religion of punk movement. They came to say 'I hate' in response of hippies' 'I love', they called a devil an angel and angel a devil, society said them to love and respect their parents and punks hated them, actually to my mind it's easy to manage people like this, for example if you want punk to bring you tea just ask him for coffee.
